This is the definition of art. The piece takes expectations and flips it on its head. Planets are commonly presented as textured and space flat. This however, gives a feeling that space is what's really active and the planet is just a void. A mass simply taking up space. Look slightly to right past the frame and it seems like the expanse is the planet.

The artist brings an air of mystery back to space with use of scale, composition, and color. It is a very common look to have the the sun cresting as the focus of the art piece. The generic similarities, however, end there. The light sits there dominating the scene in the center of the frame.

The color uses notes of blue in the mid-tones. This is particularly well done with the light that mimics the sterility of high output fluorescent bulbs and led flashlights. Subtle hints of various colored nebulae and cloud formations dot the deep blue in the expanse of space. While the surface of the planet pushes out an unnatural flat black.

This piece is meant to be wallpaper and the subtly suits the function well. It certainly won't distract you.

Not everyone will appreciate the subtlety. I almost passed by this piece seeing only the flare in the middle. It is one of the better looking and more appealing pieces. It has meaning often missed by artist, but from a distance it just looks like nothing.

A common problem for artist is that most people will never see beyond the surface. It wouldn't hurt to make the expanse, just a little bolder and more active. I'm glad you requested this critique. Upon closer inspection, this is one of my favorite, if not my favorite space image. Pure Art.
